There is evidence that HRSV infection during infancy may cause long-term respiratory problems.
The virus also causes serious disease in the elderly. Currently no vaccine is licensed to prevent HRSV-induced respiratory tract disease, and the available HRSV prophylactics and therapeutics are limited in number.
Mammalian cell lines are infected with RSV and are assessed for characteristic cytopathic changes and fused cells (syncytia) in the culture.
