PowderMed the vaccine development company (which
is part of Pfizer) will be presenting data from the Human
Experimental Influenza Challenge Study they conducted at
Retroscreen Virology's unique quarantine facility during
2007.
Details of the study were first announced
here.
The data will be presented at the
DNA vaccine conference in London on the
10th and 11th of March 2008.
The first phase of the trial was conducted at Guys Drug Research
Unit (GDRU), Quintiles UK Ltd in London. Later in the trial the
volunteers were accommodated for ten days in a residential
facility, where they were challenged with an enfeebled version of
the H3N2 strain of influenza virus which is known to cause annual
influenza in non-immunised people. At the end of this period the
volunteers were given Tamiflu, an antiviral drug, already approved
for use in the UK to reduce the duration of any potential influenza
symptoms.
Full details of this clinical study and directions for potential volunteers can be found at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/.
