About Retroscreen

Retroscreen Virology is Europe's leading contract Virology research company. The work we conduct is dedicated to creating the next generation of Antivirals and Vaccines in the field of biomedical research. Our research includes both Pre-Clinical and Clinical projects. At present Retroscreen have more than 30 staff and a turnover of over £3 million.

We currently conduct and co-ordinate several clinical trials per year involving student volunteers or patients in General Practice, particularly involving influenza or common cold viruses or vaccines.

Virucidal Testing

Retroscreen Virology can test a variety of products for their virucidal (Virus destroying) efficacy.

Clinical Trials: Experimental infection of volunteers

The concept of infection of volunteers was initiated at the Common Cold Unit, Salisbury in 1948. More recently Retroscreen has re-established a quarantine unit in London able to infect up to 100 volunteers. We are now planning to expand these studies to include other respiratory viruses.

Other Clinical Trials

  • Human Influenza Challenge studies
  • Prophylactic trials with influenza neuraminidase inhibitors
  • Therapeutic trials with influenza neuraminidase inhibitors
  • Influenza vaccine trials (intranasal or intramuscular)
  • Common Cold studies
  • The finger pad method for the evaluation of virucidal agents against viruses on human hands

In addition to our unique volunteer infection studies, Retroscreen Virology offers a complete clinical trial service.

Pre-Clinical

Our laboratories can test new compounds for efficacy against a wide range of viral diseases. We offer simple EC50 determination as well as bridging models that can be used in support of clinical trial applications to national regulatory authorities in Europe, the USA and Japan.

AVNP: Nanomaterials as Virucides

Retroscreen Virology is part of a consortium led by QinetiQ Nanomaterials Limited (QNL), a wholly owned QinetiQ subsidiary which is aiming to develop a range of nanomaterials for use in the fight against a broad spectrum of viruses.
